'I think I'll call it AmericaI said as we hit the land I took a deep breath I fell down, I could not stand Captain Arab he started Writing up some deeds He said, 'Let's set up a fort And start buying the place with beadsJust then this cop comes down the street Crazy as a loon He throw us all in jail For carryin' harpoons. Ah me I busted out Don't even ask me how I went to get some help I walked by a Guernsey cow Who directed me down To the Bowery slums Where people carried signs around Saying, 'Ban the bumsI jumped right into line Sayin' 'I hope that I'm not lateWhen I realized I hadn't eaten For five days straight. I went into a restaurant Lookin' for the cook I told him I was the editor Of a famous etiquette book The waitress he was handsome He wore a powder blue cape I ordered some suzette, I said 'Could you please make that crepeJust then the whole kitchen exploded From boillin' fat Food was flying anywhere And I left without my had. Now, I didn't mean to be nosy But I went into a bank To get some bail for Arab And all the boys back in the tank They asked me for some collateral And I pulled down my pants They threw me in the alley When up comes this girl from France Who invited me to her house I went, but she had a friend Who knocked me out And robbed my boots And I was on the street again. Well, I rapped upon a house With the US flag upon display I said, 'Could you help me out I got some friends down the way ' The man says, 'Get out of here I'll tear you limp from limbI said, 'You know they refused Jesus, tooHe said, 'You're not Him Get out of here before I break your bones I ain't your popI decided to have him arrested And I went lookin for a cop. I ran right outside And I hopped inside a cab I went out the other door This Englishman said, 'FabAs he saw me leap a hot dog stand And a chariot that stood Parked across from a building Advertising brotherhood I ran right through the front door Like a hobo sailor does But it was just a funeral parlor And the man asked me who I was. I repeated that my friends Where all in jail, with a sigh He gave me his card He said, 'Call me if they dieI shook his hand and said goodbye Ran out to the street When a bowling ball came down the road And knocked me off my feet A pay phone was ringing It just about blew my mind When I picked it up and said hello This foot came through the line. Well, by this time I was feed up At tryin'g to make a stab At bringin' back any help For my friends and captain Arab I decided to flip a coin Like either heads or tails Would let me know if I should go Back to the ship or back to jail So I hooked my sailor suit And I got a coin to flip It came up tails It rhymed with sails So I made it back to the ship. Well, I got back and took The parkin' ticket off the mast I was ripping it to shreds When this coastguard boat went past They asked me my name And I said, 'Captain KiddThey believed me but They wanted to know What exactly that I did I said for the Pope of Eruke I was employed They let me go right away They were very paranoid. Well, the last I heard of Arab He was stuck on a whale That was married to the deputy Sheriff of the jail But the funniest thing was When I was leavin' the bay I saw three ships a-sailinThere were all heading my way I asked the captain what his name was And how come he didn't drive a truck He said his name was Columbus I just said, 'Good luck'. |

Well the Marshall now he beat that kid to a bloody pulp As the dying gunfighter lay in the sun and gasped for his last breath Turn him loose let him go let him say he outdrew me fair and square I want him to feel what it's like to every moment face his death. Well I keep seeing this stuff and it just comes a-rolling in And you know it blows right through me like a ball and chain You know I can't believe we've lived so long and are still so far apart The memory of you keeps calling after me like a rolling train. I can still see the day that you came to me on the pinked desert In your busted down Ford and your platform heels I could never figure out why you chose that particular place to meet Ah, but you were right it was perfect as I got in behind the wheel. Well we drove that car all night 'til we got into San AntonAnd we slept near the Alamo your skin was so tender and soft Way down in Mexico you went out to find a doctor and you never came back I would have gone on after you but I didn't feel like letting my head get blow off. Well we're driving this car and the sun is coming up over the Rockies Now I know she ain't you but she's here and she's got that dark rhythm in her soul But I'm too over the edge and I ain't in the mood anymore to remember the times when I was your only man And she don't want to remind me. She knows this car would go out of control. Brownsville girl with your Brownsville curls Teeth like pearls shining like the moon above Brownsville girl show me all around the world. Brownsville girl you're my honey love.Well we crossed the panthandle and then we headed towards Amarillo We pulled up where Henry Porter used to live. He owned a wrecking lot outside of town about a mile Ruby was in the backyard hanging clothes she had her red hair tied back. She saw us come rolling up in a trail of dust She said 'Henry ain't here but you can come on in he'll be back in a little while'. Then she told us how times were tough and about how she was thinking of bumming a ride back to where she started But she changed the subject every time money came up She said 'Welcome to the land of the living dead'. You could tell she was so broken-hearted She said 'Even the swap meets around here are pretty corrupt'. 'How far are you all going ?' Ruby asked us with a sigh 'We're going all the way until the wheels fall off and burn Until the sun peels the paint and the seat covers fade and the water moccasin diesRuby just smiled and said. 'Ah you know some babies never learn'. Something about that movie though well I just can't get it out of my head But I can't remember why I was in it or what part I was supposed to play All I remember about it was Gregory Peck and the way people moved And a lot of them seemed to be looking my way. Brownsville girl with your Brownsville curls Teeth like pearls shining like the moon above Brownsville girl show me all around the world. Brownsville girl you're my honey love. Well they were looking for somebody with a pompadour I was crossing the street when shots rang out I didn't know whether to duck or to run so I ran We got him cornered in the churchyard ? I heard somebody shout. Well you saw my picture in the Corpus Christi Tribune. Underneath it it said: 'A man with no alibiYou went out on a limb to testify for me you said I was with you Then when I saw you break down in front of the judge and cry real tears It was the best acting I saw anybody do. Now I've always been the kind of person that doesn't like to trepass but sometimes you just find yourself over the line Oh if there's an original thought out there I could use it right now You now I feel pretty good but that ain't saying much I could feel a whole lot better If you were just here by my side to show me how. Well I'm standing in line in the rain to see a movie starring Gregory Peck Yeh but you know it's not the one I had in mind He's got a new one out now I don't even know what it's about But I'll se him in anything so I'll stand in line. Brownsville girl with your Brownsville curls Teeth like pearls shining like the moon above Brownsville girl show me all around the world Brownsville girl you're my honey love. You know it's funny how things never turn out the way you had them planned The only things we knew for sure about Henry Porter is that his name wasn't Henry Porter And you know there was something about you baby that I liked that was always too good for this world Just like you always said there was something about me you liked that I left behind in the French Quarter. Strange how people who suffer together have stronger connections than people who are most content I don't have any regrets they can talk about me plenty when I'm gone You always said people don't do what they believe in they just do what's most convenient then they repent And I always said. 'Hang on to me baby and let's hope that the roof stays on'. There was a movie I seen one time I think I sat through it twice I don't remember who I was or where I was bound All I remember about it was it starred Gregory Peck he wore a gun and he was shot in the back Seems like a long time ago long before the stars were torn down. Brownsville girl with your Brownsville curls Teeth like pearls shining like the moon above Brownsville girl show me all around the world Brownsville girl you're my honey love. |

So he bargained with the sailor boy All for a piece of gold Straightaway then he led her Down into the hold Sayin', 'I'll dress you up in sailor's clothes Your jacket shall be blue You'll see that seaport town Of Canadee-i-o'. Now, when the other sailors heard the news Well, they fell into a rage And with all the ship's company They were willing to engage Sayin', 'We'll tie her hands and feet, my boys Overboard we'll throw her She'll never see that seaport town Called Canadee-i-o'. Now, when the captain he heard the news Well, he too fell in rage And with the whole ships' company He was willing to engage Sayin', 'She'll stay all in sailor's clothes Her color shall be blue She'll see that seaport town Called Canadee-i-o'. Now, when they come down to Canada Scarcely 'bout half a year She's married this bold captain Who called her his dear She's dressed in silks and satins now She cuts a gallant show Finest of the ladies Down Canadee-i-o. Come all you fair and tender girls Wheresoever you may bee I'd have you to follow your own true love Whene'er he goes to sea For the sailors prove false to you Well, the captain he might prove true You'll see the honor I have gained By the wearing of the blue. |

In the city's melted furnace, unexpectedly we watched With faces hidden as the walls were tightening As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowin' rain Dissolved into the bells of the lightning Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned an' forsaked Tolling for the outcast, burnin' constantly at stake An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind An' the poet an the painter far behind his rightful time An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. In the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales For the disrobed faceless forms of no position Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts All down in taken-for granted situations Tolling for the deaf an' blind, tolling for the mute For the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased an' cheated by pursuit An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Even though a clouds's white curtain in a far-off corner flashed An' the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale An' for each unharmfull, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Starry-eyed an' laughing as I recall when we were caught Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended As we listened one last time an' we watched with one last look Spellbound an' swallowed 'til the tolling ended Tolling for the aching whose wounds cannot be nursed For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. |

They took a clean-cut kid And they made a killer out of him That's what they did. They said what's up is down, they said what isn't is They put ideas in his head that he thought were his. They took a clean-cut kid But they made a killer out of him That's what they did. He was on the baseball team, he was in the marching band When he was ten years old he had a watermelon stand. He was a clean-cut kid And they made a killer out of him That's what they did. They said, 'Listen boy, you're just a pupThey sent him to a napalm health spa to shape up. They gave him dope to smoke, drinks and pills A jeep to drive, blood to spill. They said 'Congratulation, you got what it takesThey sent him back into the race without any brakes. They took a clean-cut kid But they made a killer out of him That's what they did. He bought the American dream but it put him in doubt Only game he could play was Russian roulette. He drank Coca-Cola, he was eating Wonder Bread He ate Burger Kings, he was well fed. He went to Hollywood to see Peter O'Toole He stole a Rolls Royce and drove in a swimming pool. They took a clean-cut kid But they made a killer out of him That's what they did. He could've sold insurance, owned a restaurant or bar He could've been an accountant or a tennis star. He was wearing boxing gloves, took a dive one day Off the Golden Gate Bridge into China Bay. His mama walks the floor, his daddy weeps and moans They gotta sleep together in a home they don't own. They took a clean-cut kid And they made a killer out of him That's what they did. Everybody's asking why he didn't adjust All he ever wanted was somebody to trust. They took his head and turned it inside out He never did know what it was all about. He had a steady job, he joined the choir He never did plan to walk the high wire. They took a clean-cut kid And they made a killer out of him That's what they did. |

A cock is crowing far away and another soldier's deep in prayer Some mother's child has gone astray, she can't find him anywhere But I can hear another drum beating for the dead that rise Whom nature's beast fears as they come and all I see are dark eyes. They tell me to be discreet for all intended purposes They tell me revenge is sweet and from where they stand, I'm sure it is But I feel nothing for their game, where beauty goes unrecognized All I feel is heat and flame, and all I see are dark eyes. Oh, the French girl, she's in paradise and a drunken man is at the wheel Hunger pays a heavy prize to the falling gods of speed and steel Oh, time is short and the days are sweet and passion rules the arrow that flies A million faces at my feet but all I see are dark eyes. |
